The surplus lines market has grown to over $70 billion in premium, and the talent side hasn't kept pace. Here's what E&S and specialty underwriting professionals are earning in 2026.
Associate E&S Underwriter: $75,000–$95,000
Entry to mid-level E&S roles at wholesalers and MGAs are starting significantly higher than admitted carrier equivalents, reflecting the talent scarcity and technical complexity of the work.
Senior E&S Underwriter: $110,000–$155,000
Senior UWs with binding authority in specific classes (cyber, professional, construction GL, property CAT) are regularly receiving $130K–$155K base at competitive MGAs.
E&S Underwriting Manager / Director: $150,000–$220,000+
Management-level E&S roles at growth MGAs and wholesale carriers are now frequently including equity, profit sharing, and performance bonuses that push total comp well above base.
What's Driving the Premium
Three factors: hard market growth creating more premium to deploy, carrier withdrawal from admitted classes pushing more risk to E&S, and an aging workforce in the UW space with not enough junior talent coming through. Supply and demand is working firmly in candidates' favor.
